Submit to Maine History

Submissions
Authors are encouraged to submit an article, book review, or research note to the Maine History editorial team by emailing their manuscript and citations to the Editor at journal@mainehistory.org.

All submissions are subject to anonymous scholarly peer review. Acceptance of manuscripts, book reviews, and other content is at the sole discretion of the Maine History editorial team. 

Please adhere to the following requirements when submitting a manuscript article, book review, or research note. Please note that all manuscript submissions must include citations. See "Citation Requirements" for more information.

 

Manuscript Submission Requirements
1. Submissions should be emailed to the Editor at journal@mainehistory.org and include the following:

  • Manuscript in Microsoft Word file format.
  • Images as separate file attachments.
  • List of image captions and attributions, with indications of where they should be placed within the manuscript.
  • Title page with author's (or authors') name(s), contact information, and email address(es). The author's (or authors') name(s) should not appear anywhere else on the manuscript.

2. Article manuscript submissions should be approximately 20 to 35 double-spaced pages in length, inluding notes. Publication is between 8,000 and 12,000 words in length, including notes.

 

Book Reviews & Research Notes Submission Requirements
Maine History issues include book reviews of recent works on Maine history topics and occasionally publishes shorter research notes that highlight particular archival sources or collections. Review copies of books may be mailed to the Book Review Editor, Maine History, 5774 Stevens Hall, University of Maine, Orono, ME 04469.

1. Book review and research note submissions should be emailed to the Editor at journal@mainehistory.org and include the following, if relevant:

  • Manuscript in Microsoft Word file format.
  • Images as separate file attachments.
  • List of image captions and attributions, with indications of where they should be placed within the manuscript.

2. Research note submissions should be approximately 2,500 to 3,000 words in length.

 

Citation Requirements
1. Citations must conform to the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.

2. Citations should be formatted as omnibus endnotes (appearing at the end of each paragraph).

3. Multiple sources in a single note should be listed in the exact order of their appearance and should be separated by semicolons.
